This article is pretty accurate based on what we have observed over the years from many of our competitors. In addition from Angies list, kudzu and yelp are also excellent sources to view a companies trackrecord. Also, do not pay for the job ahead of time to ensure you don't get burned!

I have a friend that went through the same thing and is now doing well in a media company in NY. He had a very difficult time finding a full time job after college. There were lots of interviews but no hire. What he did was work part time somewhere while he interned in the field he wanted to be in. After the internship he was able to get his foot in the door and land a good job.

You can also try temp to hire positions. It's alot easier to get these type of jobs because the person hiring you doesn't feel as pressured to make a decision as it is only temp in the beginning. At the same time, you get your foot in the door and if you make a good enough impression, you will be hired full time.

Oh yes, the Catch 22 dilemma. Your best bet in that situation is to know someone who knows people inside the organization. Try networking with your family and friends to find a common connection to the company. Chances are better than you think. Someone may say I don’t know anybody in that company but I know someone in this company.

Yeah, it's an absolute bummer. My advice is do anything and everything you can, even if it's basic. Everything you do along the way, prepares you for what is to come.

This is exactly what I'm going through right now. Trying to find a job with only the experience I got while in college, and it's very frustrating.

Yes, things get cleared up quickly after you have a conversation and see the other side, that is for sure!

Thanks again for posting on this topic--being able to deal with difficult customers is certainly a challenge and you've outlined some useful steps here.

Nick, dude you can't take that personally. Most stuff gets modified and it may have had nothing to do with you and your posts. So what if someone did not approve your post, I don't always approve some comments people leave because if it's negative or not even in reference then why approve it, it's YOUR blog. Anyways don't take it personal, oh and great article Business Beware, love the site and blog, keep up the great work.

Good post; I agree with most of what you've written, and I especially like #3-- focusing on what you can do instead of what you can't. Not taking it personally is important as well; they can't be mad at you because they don't even know you. I would add listening to your list--let them say their piece before you speak yourself.

However, I disagree with #5: " tell them you don’t need their business."

While that may be one way to get them out of your face, it's a bad way. You do need their business, but more importantly, you need the business of their friends and their family. You need the business of the people that read their blog, their Tweets, and the comments they'll write online about your product or service.

Smiling in their face when they're upset isn't so great either--I'd suggest showing empathy instead of doing something that, as you've said, "they can't stand."

Are people sometimes unreasonable? Yes, they are...but from their side of the counter or phone, it may not seem so unreasonable.
